We have contained our pets to approximately 3 acres of our 9 acre hobby farm. The fence has allowed us to keep our gardens and other areas protected from the pets along with keeping our pets in a safe perimeter on our property (not the highway or the neighbors lawn) We love to offer our pets the freedom to run, but not into traffic or chasing bikers, joggers, walkers etc...this has lead to a trip to the vet at $450.00 to mend a broken leg. Also, it has kept our dogs from wandering over to the neighboring lot and home to their 7 dogs on chains. In order to convince our neighbor that we do not wish any additional visit from other animals(one dog, chain and all, killed 9 of our pet ducks), we chose to contain our pets very effectively with no chains.
The downsides are few. Our application requires a double run of underground wire. A bit more expensive and twice the work trenching it in. The collars use a plasic connector to buckle and after only 2 months the first buckle was broken. The collars can not be worn for more than 12 hours at a time, so it is on and off several times a day. I was able to take the correction device and install it in a similar collar that we already had in our massive inventory of pet supplies with little effort (a big hole puncher and a pliers) I am sure the buckles are plastic to reduce risk of injury to the pets and will last a longer period if you are carefull.
We would recommend this product. The pricing through this web-site was comparable to similar products sold at our local fleet stores and box stores. The model we purchased did not seem to be a stocked retail item, some models do not have the same capabilities for the amount of land you wish to enclose like the unit we chose. I found the instructions available through this and other web-sites invaluable in the planning and installation, along with the enclosed DVD.

My dog is 12 years old, has used the invisible fence for 11 1/2 years, and I don't think he will run away, but without the collar he pushes the boundries. The collar helps me to know that he is safe. I do wonder if the weight of the collar might be a little too much for an older dog.
